Our Story

The Village Lamp Shop Inc. has been serving downtown Rochester and the surrounding area since 1978. Owned and operated by James and William Beuthien, the Village Lamp Shop Inc. is the continuation of a family business that is as old as household use of electric lamps.

We got our start in the early 1900's when James Waddell "Grandfather of the current owners" started his working life in London England as a Shabbos goy lighting lamps and candles for the neighboring Jewish community. James Waddell went on to an education as an artisan and was trained as a finish carpenter. During the Second World War he signed up to serve in the Royal Air Force. His pilot training brought him to Selfridge Air Force Base in South East Michigan. During his training he decided that after the war he would like to return to southeast Michigan with his wife and two daughters. He liked the Idea of his daughters being allowed the opportunity to attend University and pursue any career they choose.

James Waddell got his start in the states by doing lamp repair for a small shop in Royal Oak Michigan. A few years later he was took the opportunity to buy the repair portion of the business he was working in. Several years after that the shop owners were considering retirement, so he purchased the rest of the shop.

James (also known as jim the lamp man) ran the shop for another 15 years. His son-in-laws Tom Beuthien and Mike Patton expressed interest in the business and he was happy to train them. Eventually he retired, and sold the business to Tom and Mike. The knowledge of repairing and making custom lamps that James had passed on allowed Tom and Mike to run and grow the business. They went on to open a second store in Rochester and also bought a Lampshade factory in Detroit.

In the mid 1970's the partnership began to suffer, due to the different managing styles of the two partners. They eventually decided to divide up the assets and go on to run separate businesses. Mike took control of the original store in Royal oak and Tom took control of the factory "Custom Shade Makers" and the now closed second location "The Little Yellow Lamp House" in Rochester Michigan. Tom tried to make ta go of it in the production end putting his efforts into the factory, but soon realized it was not ideal for him. He had loved running a retail shop, and decided to close down the factory and direct his efforts to the small retail location in Rochester. Tom renamed the shop Village Lamp Shop and Having brought some of the equipment from the factory began to teach himself how to manufacture lampshades on a much smaller scale.

Tom ran the Village Lamp Shop for the next 30 years. He grew the business from a tiny 2 room store to a shop that occupies two buildings. In the 1991 Tom took incorporated the shop. It was about this time that Toms Sons James and William were graduating from Northern Michigan University. His Two Sons had grown up working summers and some evenings in the business and they were now ready to try to bring their own special ability’s into the shop. William had received his BFA in Illustration and Design, While James Had received his BFA in Metalsmithing and sculpture. The education that was brought into the business helped to alter the fundamental style of the shop. In the past the majority of the lamps were purchased from major lamp manufacturers. While The lampshades were a combination of lampshades made in the shop and lampshades purchased from other manufacturers. William and James pushed for the Idea of more and more custom lamps and lampshades.

In 2007 Thomas had decided it was time to let go of control of the Shop and handed it over to his sons. It was at this time that the world of brick and mortar retail stores was beginning deal with the effects of Internet commerce. The sales were dropping, The majority of consumers were looking for information to help them decide on what to order from the internet. The decision was made to drastically change the style of the Village Lamp Shop Inc.
